How to facilitate communication ?
PHONE – In Ethiopia exists an extended net. And in Addis Ababa it is digital. International calls are expensive: 1,- € per minute to Europe or Latin America. Ethiopian Telekom has a monopoli, so you have no choice. Sundays and by night the connection is very good.

TIME LAG - 20.00 h MEZ corresponds to 22.00 h Ethiopian time. In the European summertime MESZ the difference is only one hour later here in Ethiopia. Argentinian time + 6 hours are the difference to Ethiopian time, identical whether summer or wintertime.

SMS – Here we can not receive SMS. The net of mobile phones is very good. We have a transmitting mast near by our house (we can see it). However, after last year nobody can receive SMS anymore.

MAIL – The mail is very good in Ethiopia. And here we have very nice stamps. But there are no mailmen. So we have a post office box – P. O. Box in Martins office. At least once a week he pass by the office checking if there is any new mail in his box! All mail transport to Ethiopia is automatic by air mail, so it is not necessary to pay the air mail surcharge. After 10 days your mail is arrive here.

DHL – The international packet service of the Deutsche Post has in Addis Ababa several branch offices. And you can see cars and motorbikes with the logo of DHL.

EMAIL - is slow. The normal connection is per modem, it means 48,0 kBit/s. The normal transmission is per satellite and the outgoing capacity is low. They have a new glass fiber cable to Djibouti. They use it for video-conferences by official side. So, often at daytime the outgoing capacity is overcharged. Here they do not have any private supplier of internet server. So the state controls all activities.

VOIP - The Ethiopian Telecom do not accepted competition. So the use of programs like skype is forbidden and it is not possible to get a conection. However, sometimes a caller of outside the country has no success to call somebody in Ethiopia.

BLOG – The famous blog providers like e.g. google (beta.blogger.com) are blocked in Ethiopia. So nobody has access to this kind of information. Some small or unknown providers are accessible.
